Lactation Nurse Specialist at Yale New Haven Health summary:
The Lactation Nurse Specialist provides expert clinical support to
breastfeeding families and nursing staff, ensuring the delivery of
high-quality care under the guidance of medical leadership. This
role involves clinical leadership, education, and professional
development initiatives to enhance nursing practices in lactation
services. The specialist serves as a resource for community health
professionals and contributes to the advancement of lactation
policies and standards.

Under the direction of the Medical Clinical Director and/or the
Manager of Lactation Services assists nursing personnel in
identifying and meeting the nursing care needs of the breastfeeding
families. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team to
plan, evaluate and insure quality of care. Possesses and
demonstrates a high degree of expertise in care of the
breastfeeding dyad. Provides comprehensive consultation to nurses,
physicians and other professional health care team members.
Provides clinical leadership in activities of the department
relating to policies, standards of care, and the collaborative
practice of primary nursing. Contributes to the expansion of the
professional development of the nursing staff.

Responsibilities
EDUCATION
Registered nurse with current Connecticut nursing licensure, BSN
preferred. Lactation consultant with documentation of current
national certification (i.e. International Board of Certified
Lactation Consultants, UCLA Extension Program). 2 years experience
as a lactation consultant preferred.
EXPERIENCE
2-3 years of RN experience preferred. New graduate RNs considered.
Demonstrated clinical expertise and in-depth knowledge in specialty
area, encompassing the well baby, premature and/or sick neonate and
post-partum mothers.
LICENSURE
Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) or Certified Breastfeeding
Counselor (CBC) certification required. International
Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required or obtained
within 1 year of hire.
SPECIAL SKILLS
Demonstrated effective teaching, communication, research and
leadership skills.
Additional Information
IBCLC required for this position, as well as RN and CPR.
